COVID-19 Update

Throughout the year, under normal situations, we help families prepare their estate planning documents. Almost, without fail, our clients leave the office feeling relieved. Not only are they comforted and reassured, but their family members and loved ones are as well.

Recently I read an opinion piece in the New York Times written by Dr. Kathryn Dreger, a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Georgetown University and a doctor of medicine in northern Virginia.

As an elder law attorney, not a doctor, I was amazed at the information detailed throughout her piece, “What You Should Know Before You Need a Ventilator.” I am providing a link to this article, not to focus on the effects; but to underscore the need for certain documents at this time of medical crisis. COVID-19 can strike anyone, anytime, anywhere with such swiftness that life and death decisions are hard or even impossible to convey to our loved ones.

Please consider for yourself or your loved ones the importance of preparing documents such as Power of Attorney, Health Care Surrogate, Living Will, etc. Make your wishes known so that your family members or loved ones aren’t left with a feeling of second guessing or guilt.

To accommodate our clients during this time, especially during the Governor’s stay-home order, we offer telephone and video conferences. In this way, we can consult and prepare your documents while you remain at home; then minimize the signing and notarizing time in the office.

If we can help you, give us a call at 239-334-7212 to set up an appointment.
